Jessica Ennis' pert derriere may have set the Twittersphere alight and a dapper David Beckham had us girls agog, but it was Kate Middleton's appearance at the Sports Personality Year Awards tonight that was most unexpected. It was only this morning when news leaked that the Duchess of Cambridge would be attending the ceremony in London to present two awards, despite cancelling her last four public appearances. As a Team GB Ambassador and a dedicated supporter for our athletes during this summer’s Olympics and Paralympics, a senior royal source said the 30-year-old was 'keen to show her support to the UK’s sportsmen and women at this prestigious event which caps a momentous year for British sport’. So, despite suffering from severe morning sickness for the past two weeks, Kate pulled on her glad rags, gave her glossy locks a flick and flashed that impeccable smile. She handed Bradley Wiggins the Sports Personality of the Year trophy as well as presenting London 2012 chief Lord Coe with the Lifetime Achievement award.
And what did Kate wear for her first formal public appearance since announcing her pregnancy? Alexander McQueen, of course. The Duchess' bottle green dress is the handy work of her go-to designer Sarah Burton, who collected an OBE from Buckingham Palace last week and confessed she's hoping to design Kate's maternity wear. Well, it looks like her hopes are coming true. The floor-length gown made of crepe wool features bell-sleeves, a deep v-neck, trompe l'oeil belt waistband and a sweeping thigh-high slit while that slight peplum is perfect for concealing a barely-there baby bump. Black Jimmy Choo heels, Kiki McDonough blue topaz earrings and Asprey button pendant topped off the look. A black version of Kate's dress is currently available from www.alexandermcqueen.com for £1000. Go, copy Kates, go!
