Jean Paul Gaultier Gets Nostalgic With A Re-Editions Pre-Fall Line

2013 is set to be a stand out year for Jean Paul Gaultier, as last month he announced he will be launching a younger streetwear label for Spring 2014, and now he has shown looks from his pre-fall 2013 collection, which includes some of his greatest hits.

The line has 15 classic re-worked items including the 'robe sac poubelle', wide-leg pants and leather platform pumps. Gaultier said to WWD of his re-editions line: “In fashion, it’s about the sensibility of the moment, and I thought it was time to show things which are still good today and can add something extra [to the wardrobe]. But I also wanted to give young women the opportunity to have some of the shapes and pieces I’m most proud of and that are truly me,” explained Gaultier.

He also explained his unusual fabric choice to WWD: “You see, Neoprene is much more sophisticated today than it was then. The pieces I did in ’88 must be damaged by now, but the new generation of Neoprene will last another 50 years, I assure you.”

Gaultier has recently switched the production and distribution of his women's ready to wear collection back to Italy’s Gibò SpA, which was his original partner back in the Eighties and early Nineties, which has obviously made the designer nostalgic. As although Gaultier said that his collection "feels like a new beginning," he has certainly delved into his archives for inspiration. He said of the return: “It’s an emotional comeback for me, like a family get-together. Walking down the streets of Florence, I ran into many old friends.”
