Raf Simons is slowly but surely sculpting a recognisably ‘Dior’ look. Four collections in from the Creative Director – with Couture spring summer 2013 presented this week – and we’re enjoying the designer’s radical take on, well, not being radically different each time a new season arrives.
For a long time the style jump between spring and autumn could be further than even the most fully-stocked wardrobe could easily take you. There are still some wildly creative designers who can’t help but respond and react with the opposite to whatever they’ve previously sent down the runway. In the past few years the idea-filled Marc Jacobs - king of these fashion machines - has taken us through candy carousels, ‘70s disco nights, a French bondage film noir and a swinging ‘60s checkerboard. But Raf’s taking a different tack…
So what’s this Belgian boy Simons up to? Evolution, dear friends, not revolution. And for the sake of our wallets, and daily effort, we’re pleased to see fashion’s new way unfolding as such. Same could be said for the very-hyped Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane even though he’s only offered up the one women’s runway so far – his signature rock-boho look is coveted, so why stray?
So without the shock of the new, Raf is crafting strands of the Dior DNA and repeating them with enough tweaks each season to keep the fashion hungry full up. We’ve noticed that in each of the four collections you’ll find tuxedos, florals, full skirts, metallics, pointed shoes, bandeau necklines and jolts of primary colour – especially against black. There’s also some drapery and fabric folding techniques we’ve noticed. Consider any of the looks in the gallery below a worthwhile investment...
