If there's one thing we're looking forward to in 2013 it's Alexander Wang at Balenciaga. The wunderkind of the fashion world was named creative director of the Parisian fashion house in December following Nicolas Ghesquière's departure after 15 years at the helm. Wang's design abilities, street savvy and ability to generate buzz all make him the perfect man for the job.
'It was just a natural evolution of the company,' François-Henri Pinault, chairman & CEO of PPR, said at the time. 'So we’re looking at a new name in the promotion of the brand... He’s young. He lives in New York. We will get even more exposure of the brand worldwide. It’s a new adventure starting for him.'
And, apparently, not just an adventure for Wang. Rumours have reached Grazia Towers that the designer will benefit from the help of a certain fashion maven. Step forward Carine Roitfeld. The Parisian-turned-New Yorker will reportedly act as stylist alongside Wang's design talent at Chez Balenciaga. Exciting, non?
Wang and Roitfeld have long been fashion friends. In September 2011, the designer popped up at Barneys in New York for the Celebrating Carine Roitfeld shindig and a year later, he was spotted partying the night away at Carine's MAC Ball for the launch of her cosmetics line. And lest we forget when Mme. Roitfeld, wearing a crocodile jersey dress, attended the CFDA Awards in June 2012 on the arm of the hottest designer on the block. In fact, this could well be a match made in fashion heaven.
'I think it would be great to have someone as young and fresh as Nicolas was,' Carine commented last year when asked about who should fill Ghesquière‘s shoes. 'Some young designer — totally fresh, very new, very oxygen. When they took Nicolas, he was totally unknown…I like when the company has — how you say? — the balls to do something new.'
So Carine, who is editor-in-chief of brand new title CR Fashion Book and global fashion director at US Harper’s Bazaar, may be the ideal lady to steer Wang as he puts his personal signature on the brand and takes Balenciaga in a more modern direction. What's more, La Roitfeld will ensure that French je ne sais quois is alive and kicking at the Parisian fashion house. Expect more Goth black leather, lashings of raciness and maybe a touch of leopard print if the rumours are indeed true...
